Salvia is a large genus, containing the common Sage or Salvia officinalis.
Sage is an aromatic plant easily identifiable by its tall clusters of purplish flowers.
The name Salvia comes from the Latin word “Salvare”.
Sage is rich in bioactive compounds such as essential oils (which composition varies remarkably throughout the year), Saponins, Arachidonic Acid, Vitamins and Phytoestrogens (estrogen-like substances).
