Although it is better known as Milk Thistle, St. Mary's Thistle, or Milk Thistle, among others, Silybum Marianum (scientific name) has Silymarin as its active ingredient.
Milk thistle is a plant that grows throughout the Mediterranean and was introduced to the United Kingdom by herbalists in the 16th century.
At that time, it was used for protection against insect and snake bites, as an anti-inflammatory, and for digestive disorders such as those related to the liver and gallbladder.
Silymarin is composed of three isomers called silybin, silidanin, and silychristin, all classified as flavonolignans, with silybin being the most important component. Milk thistle is a member of the sunflower family, with purple flowers and milky-white leaves. It blooms from June to August and is harvested in late summer.
More than 300 scientific studies have been conducted on the properties of milk thistle and the potential benefits of its use. Today, it is one of the most extensively studied plants and traditionally used in multiple remedies for its effects.
It takes 8.5 grams of the plant's seeds to obtain 286 mg of milk thistle extract, the amount found in each of our tablets. For Lamberts® Milk Thistle, we use a standardized extract of the seeds, guaranteeing 200 mg of silymarin per tablet.
Few companies produce all their herbal products in extract form, but we believe it's essential. Therefore, while the "whole herb" alternative sounds great, it's simply the dried plant material, which will provide primarily fiber and few active ingredients (and that's if it can be digested).
The tablets or caplets of the LAMBERTS Milk Thistle tablets are concentrated, soluble, and a guarantee of safety and efficacy. We believe this distinction, along with the manufacturing and quality standards of LAMBERTS products, including herbal extracts, is the reason our Milk Thistle tablets are considered among the most highly valued products on the food supplement market.
