Ginger belongs to the Zingiberaceae family. It is a perennial plant, native to the tropical areas of Southeast Asia, which can reach up to 1m in height. Its stem is underground (it is a horizontal rhizome), highly valued for its aroma and flavor, the leaves are narrow and elongated, the flowers are yellow and purple, and the root is hard and gnarled. Ginger has been used for thousands of years, Galen used it in some treatments for malformations or paralysis, and Avicenna recommended it as an aphrodisiac, it is also a basic plant in Chinese herbal medicine.
The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the rhizomes.
